COPILOT / FIELD GUIDE
A 3-minute team demo · 30 Oct 2026
01 / The mental model

A session is the container.
The agent does the work.

A session holds the conversation and execution state. Its agent reasons, calls tools, and responds.

Remember

Session = ongoing conversation. Agent = the worker operating within it.

Evidence & scope

This educational demo reflects research on 30 October 2026. Live observations apply to the tested environment, not every client, session type, or configuration.

  1. Official CLI release notes, 1.0.71: default subagent depth changed from 6 to 4. Usage-based billing users could configure subagents.maxDepth up to 128. No maximum-depth stress test was performed here; live session overrides may apply.
  2. Official app session documentation: session modes, worktrees/current checkouts, chats, and the app's relationship to Copilot CLI.
  3. IDE subagent documentation: its no-nesting statement concerns IDE integrations. Do not substitute IDE behavior for the app/CLI runtime.
  4. Official SDK session implementation: session.send is sent over JSON-RPC. This alone neither proves nor disproves standard A2A compliance. Complete app source was not available for a protocol audit.
  5. Live probes: a task spawned a task returning NESTED_TASK_OK. A child chat invoked a task and created a grandchild chat; the grandchild's parent metadata was independently inspected. Both temporary chats were archived. No code or settings were changed.
  6. Scope: ordinary-chat tests do not establish the creation capabilities of every Project child. No universal session-creation policy was tested.

Diagrams are conceptual, not process/network topology. Separate contexts do not guarantee separate processes, filesystems, or permissions. Ordinary new child sessions need a sufficient kickoff brief; they do not automatically inherit the parent's full transcript. Forking is a separate operation. Source links need internet; the presentation itself does not.
